In an unfortunate turn of events, Zack Snyder is now stepping down from the upcoming DC Film Justice League, with Joss Whedon taking the helm. Thanks to a new report from THR, Zack Snyder has given a statement that he will be stepping down from directing the movie to spend more time with his family, after the unexpected suicide of his daughter. His Wife, Producer on the movie Deborah Snyder, is also stepping down from the project.
In order for the movie to keep on track for its November 17th release, Joss Whedon is coming on board to finish up the movie, as well as direct some additional scenes that he has written for the film. Snyder’s daughter had died of suicide in March, and was kept private only until now, with only a select few knowing about this. Zack Snyder had this to say about it:
“In my mind, I thought it was a cathartic thing to go back to work, to just bury myself and see if that was way through it, The demands of this job are pretty intense. It is all consuming. And in the last two months I’ve come to the realization …I’ve decided to take a step back from the movie to be with my family, be with my kids, who really need me. They are all having a hard time. I’m having a hard time.”
Zack Snyder was able to view a rough cut of the film, and wanted to add some additional scenes, so Joss Whedon was brought on board to help out with the process. According to THR, the film is still very much Snyder’s and will still have his vision and tone of the movie.
It is important in times like this to remember no matter what the property, fans of the genre and of filmmaking in general need to show support and strength and unity in times like this, giving support to the creators of these films in times of crisis.
On behalf of the Comicboiz, we give our condolences to the Snyder family.
