The Punisher #1 — Comic Book Review

The Punisher

Issue #1

Punisher
Cover

The Punisher is written by Becky Cloonan, Illustrated by Steve Dillon, and Colored by Frank Martin.

Marvel’s new Punisher series makes it notable on the cover that it is not for kids! Which means only one thing… Unadulterated Awesomeness!

Well, for the most part at least. I do wish that Marvel would have chosen an artist better suited for the gritty atmosphere that surrounds this story line. I hate to see The Punisher getting the generic Marvel art treatment that makes the panels almost cinematic. Dillon didn’t do a bad job, but I don’t feel like his style is as dangerous as Frank Castle.

Sadly, Cloonan didn’t do an awesome job in making The Punisher sound like a badass killer either. She does make him LOOK like the marine from hell, but I was not sold on his personality. What does stand out about Cloonan’s writing is the insane gore infested scenes that actually do this title justice.

I only recommend this title for those who love intense action scenes. If you’re looking for a good story, you’re probably better off picking up the volume after a couple of months. There’s still a lot left to fill in and I am not thrilled about all of the unanswered questions I have. Comics are meant to have installments, so I guess I have to wait, but it’s not going to be easy considering the disturbing cliffhanger I was left with.
