James Wan To Produce ‘Arachnophobia’ Remake

Filmmaker James Wan is adding another classic horror franchise to his increasingly busy schedule. The Aquaman director has signed on to produce a remake of the 1990 horror-comedy Arachnophobia through his production house Atomic Monster. While a writer has yet to be announced, the original film’s director, Frank Marshall, will be joining the remake as an executive producer.

The original Arachnophobia followed an incredibly venomous South American spider accidentally smuggled into a small Californian town in the coffin of one its victims. After cross-breeding with a domestic spider, their resulting spawn threatened to overtake the entire town and spread across the country. Faced with the lethal infestation, the town’s inhabitants had to eliminate the nests and its progenitors before the spiders could expand their territory.

Produced by future Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, the 1990 film was a critical and commercial success upon its initial release. It also marked the directorial debut of Frank Marshall, who went on to become a prolific producer, including producing 2015’s Jurassic World and 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Along with producing The Nun (a spinoff of 2016’s The Conjuring 2), directing Aquaman and executive producing a live-action Swamp Thing series for DC Comics’ upcoming premium streaming service DC Universe, Wan is quickly becoming one of the busiest men in Hollywood.
