Disney’s live-action Mulan finally has an actor to star opposite Crystal Liu as Mulan’s new love interest, Chen Honghui. As per the Hollywood Reporter, rising star Yoson An has just been cast as Honghui in the live-action adaptation of Mulan. The New Zealand actor of Chinese descent might not be as popular now, but the actor’s making his mark and is set to appear in Mortal Engines and The Meg later this year.
Chen Honghui is a new character replacing the original animated movie’s leading man, Li Shang. Described as an ambitious and confident recruit who joins Commander Tung’s unit of men, Honghui becomes one of Mulan’s biggest allies in the live-action movie. He eventually becomes Mulan’s love interest.
Replacing Li Shang with Chen Honghui sparked a lot of controversy among Disney Fans. Shang is a well-loved character in the original Mulan. In the film, Shan starts out as Mulan’s commanding officer. The two start falling in love after Shang discovers that the man who saved his life on the battlefield is actually a woman and after Mulan ends up saving all of China.
Even though fans are disappointed over Li Shang’s replacement, some are still happy to know that Disney’s been keeping its promise to cast Chinese actors or actors from Chinese descent. Rogue One’s Donnie Yen is going to play Commander Tung, Gong Li has been set to play the film’s villain and Jet Li is coming on board as the Emperor of China.
Mulan is set to premiere on March 27, 2020.
