It looks as though the rumored Joker origin film is no longer a rumor.
THR has reported that Oscar-nominated actor Joaquin Phoenix has officially signed on to star as the clowned prince of crime in the film which is being described as "exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.” Apparently the film will have a dark and experimental tone to it. The film is rumored to not tie in to the current DCEU.
The film is being directed by Todd Phillips (The Hangover, Due Date) who also co-wrote the script with Scott Silver (8 Mile, The Fighter). Emma Tillinger Koskoff (Wolf of Wall Street) will produce. The projected budget of the film is $55 million.
Although Joaquin Phoenix is set to star in the Joker origin film, Warner Bros. also has plans for a standalone Joker film starring Jared Leto who played the Batman nemesis in 2016's Suicide Squad.
Warner Bros. does not yet have a release date in place for the film but it's said that the film can hit theaters as early as next year. The film begins shooting September in New York.
